Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery is the most frequent aesthetic operation performed on children. Often we correct the ears prior to the child entering school to eliminate potential psychological trauma from the teasing of classmates. Adults may also have their ears reshaped. Ear surgery improves the shape or positioning of the ears and reduces their size.

In case the defect of the ear shape is sufficient,

a part of the operation cost can be covered by KELA (Social Insurance Institution of Finland).

Operation

The operation is usually done in local anesthesia but can be also done in general anesthesia in children and pain-sensitive adult patients. The ear cartilage is reshaped in order to position the ears closer to the head. This usually is accomplished through incisions placed behind the ears. The scars are concealed in the natural skin crease.

The operation lasts about an hour.

After surgery, the patient is instructed to wear a gauze dressing or bandage for several weeks to ensure that the ears heal in their new, corrected position.
